Training in Clermont
The focal point of training in Clermont is Waterfront Park (330 3rd St. Clermont, Fl. 34711). Most swim, bike, & runs start & finish here. A great training venue with clean showers, safe lockers, & cold water fountains. The open water swim area is a great way to cool off 365 days a year after hard bike or run & always free. The swim area is considered by many as the very best swimming around (including this author) with the 13 numbered poles 180 yards in length. South Lake Trail runs right past this Park & goes from Apopka to Groveland; some 40+ miles long.
Our store; Dash Sports (741 West Montrose St. Clermont, Fl 34711) is located in the very heart of downtown Clermont, so a visit to be introduced is a must!
Dash Sports puts on two free runs each week; Wednesday at 6:15pm & Thursday at 5am.
We also have a running group; The Dash Running Club led by Coach Hemant Hariprashad. This group is open to the public & welcomes runners of all abilities. Dash is located two blocks off the South Lake Trail between many restaurants, breweries, & other shops including our next door neighbors at the Clermont Brewing Company (750 West Desoto St. Clermont, Fl 34711) that is a great place for a post ride drink.
Each & every Saturday at 7:30am, parkrun Clermont happens at Lake Hiawatha Park (450 12th St. Clermont, Fl. 34711). The free timed 5k is put on by volunteers. Please visit this link to register & print your parkrun barcode that you will need to bring to every event. After parkrun, runners & volunteers meet up for breakfast at Cheeser’s Palace restaurant (707 West Montrose St. Clermont, Fl 34711). Clermont parkrun is a great way to meet training partners & find out what is going on for training the rest of the week.
The only public training pool in town (at this time) is the National Training Center; an Olympic sized outdoor pool. Plan accordingly because the pool does close often during the rainy season. Their Thorguard system can be monitored here in case you are wondering if the NTC are open or closed. Waterfront park swim area is always open when the NTC is closed. The cost to swim at the NTC is $15 a day. The USAT certified facility also has a private track & cross country course for members & guests of the facility. This hosts the World’s fastest Adidas Sprinters. Inquiries to use the track or cross country course should go through the NTC front desk.
There are a few hotels in Clermont. Home2 Suites by Hilton, NTC - Fairfield by Marriott and the Hampton Inn. If you are looking to stay longer and would like the option of a kitchen there are several options. Siena at Bella Collina has fully furnished multi bedroom accomodations. A local realtor has built a duplex overlooking the lake and the pedestrian trail and is open to renting for weeks or months, contact Diane Travis. There is also Vacation Village.
There are rides that start from any one of the bike stores in the area: Clermont Bicycles, Epic Cycles, Winter Garden Wheelworks, & Trek Clermont. There are also ride maps on Map My Ride, and Florida Freewheelers
There is also the favorite Orange Grove/Clay Road/Dirt Road 10 mile loop-there isn't a website for this except here. If you are out there on the right morning you might see hot air balloons taking off or some fun wild animals.
Across the street from the 10 mile dirt road is Lake Louisa State Park. It is also a great, traffic free, place to train. It also has camping sites, RV hook up and furnished cabins.
We hope you have enough information and websites to put together your own weekend or week of training in the hills and warmth of South Lake County.
